    Test your smoke detectors

Whatever ones you have, test them! The house 2 doors down was gutted last night. My neighbour woke up in time and got himself and his wife out. There is a language barrier but I don't think they were woken by a smoke detector so they were really lucky. Check'em. Craig

Craig's Airplay2 Whole Home Audio setup

We renovated most of the main floor of our house and added in-wall and in-ceiling speakers in 4 of the rooms.  I thought I'd share what I've done.  My objective was to have a simple way to play background music in the house from our Apple devices. Cheap.   [sharedmedia=gallery:images:1328]   All...

    "The Smart Home is Dead"

Aha.  Maybe some are waking up to the thought that voice control, by itself, really doesn't give you that much:   "...half a decade after Alexa launched, there’s a lingering question: has Amazon’s assistant actually become more useful?"   "...Ultimately, Amazon has been extremely — even scarily...

    Battery life

How long should a 12V lead acid battery last?   I have a UPS backing up my HTPC.  I replaced the 12V 7.2 AH battery in October 2016 and it is utterly dead again.   That seems rather a short life to me.  We never had an extended outage so the battery backup only kicked in a few times for a few...

    iOS app for Envisalink-4

Envisacor has released an iOS app ("Eyezon Mobile") for accessing your compatible security system through their Envisalink board.  I've only just installed it but it seems to work fine.   https://itunes.apple.com/ca/app/eyezon-mobile/id1268337291?mt=8   One quibble, I wish the Status screen...

    Cat 3 is good for...

Found a few more things that had belonged to my late brother including 2 nearly full boxes of Cat 3.  Could be almost 2,000 feet.  24 gauge, manufactured "11/6/Q4".   If I pulled any more telephone lines, which is highly doubtful, I would use at least Cat 5e.   Is there any good use for Cat 3...

iPhone 7 performance v. Android phones

GeekBench scores are starting to come in for shipping iPhone 7 models, and:   http://bgr.com/2016/09/15/iphone-7-vs-android-benchmarks/   Details in the linked article.   In fact, current Android models "aren’t even able to beat last year’s iPhone 6s in performance tests".   Craig

    Homekit announcements

I'm not trying to start another flame war; just passing along some information that hasn't been mentioned here.   Broadcom announced on May 4 that their SDK now fully supports Homekit.     http://www.pcworld.com/article/2921852/broadcom-hardware-platform-gains-support-for-apples-homekit.html  ...

"View New Content" button not working?

Hi:   Typically, I visit the site once a day and start by clicking "View New Content".  Starting yesterday, it now responds "Sorry, no new content".  Yet when I went to "My Content", a thread I posted to showed activity:  ...
