    Cameras and motion

Motion detection for recording is fine, but motion detection for alerts is an exercise in frustration. ALERTS should be Sensor-based ONLY.

    Haiku The new product

I would still be using Haiku every day, if it was still available on the iTunes store.  I just upgraded my iPad, and now have no way to talk to my OmniPro panel.   What a pain.   Hopefully a replacement will be coming... soon?  I almost don't care what it costs.

    Are Chinese cameras secure?

You should absolutely be running your own modem, and firewall. I went with an Arris modem, and my PFsense box is a hardware firewall from Netgate.

    Are Chinese cameras secure?

PFsense is what I use. Highly recommended.

    Outdoor video cam recommendatios?

Why not use a single PoE injector and a laptop? That way you have PoE everywhere you have an extension cord, and can test cameras before mounting them?

Replacement Security System for Second Home

So that begs the question... what WOULD this group advise as an alarm/automation controller for a new build? I have an Omnipro II, but it doesn’t seem like Leviton is that interested in it... and apparently ELK isn’t that thrilled about innovating in the space either. I’m likewise building a...

    Controlling minisplit air conditioners

I hate to necro-post, but I’m in the same boat myself. I’m planning on using several mini-splits for AC, and home automation control would be a must. It’s off grid, so every watt counts... hence the need for automation controls.

    Elk M1 power issues

I'd start with this.  Plenty of failing power-supplies give you a nominal reading when placed on a meter, but die when you test them under load.    And those transformers are a common item to go bad.  Fortunately, replacements are cheap.

    Asterisk PBX and voice?

I have played with Asterisk a bit (changed over to FreeSwitch a few years ago), but have no idea how you'd do voice recognition for dialing.    I hadn't encountered the Pi-hole before... that's a nifty use for a Pi.  I use the Untangle firewall to block ads, but the Pi is a nice, low-powered...

Security Camera setup (POE, NVR) to work with eKeypad Pro

I agree with Pete.  Personally, I've yet to see a modern IP camera (or NVR) that doesn't support video motion detection; it's a standard feature.   But here's the thing:  video motion detection sucks for alerts/events.  The false-alarm rate is off-the-charts, triggered as it is by car...

    Pre-Wire for Centralized Lighting

This is relevant to my interests. I’m in the process of designing/building a home in the woods. It will have solar power, since there is literally nothing else out there. Because of this, the site needs to be watt-efficient, ultra-reliable, and remotely-manageable. This means lights that...

PC Access Version 3.15.0.803 (17/December/2015) & Email Notifier Update Released

Anybody manage to get the Omni notifier board to work with Gmail?  I had to ditch my previous email relay service (they doubled their price) and am trying to relay email through g-suite in Google business.   Can't get anything to go through.   I'm updating the notifier board to 1.5 to see if...

    IP camera under eaves

The other posters are correct.  Shielded cable is completely unnecessary for what you are doing.  I have eight IP cameras of various sorts on the outside of my home, and NONE of them are on shielded cable.   5 years with no issues.

PIRs have a boot-up cycle they go through when they power up.

    USB Charging Delemma

I'll vouch for that device.  It's sitting on my desk right now, and it keeps my iPhone, my wife's iPhone, and two iPads pretty well charged-up.

IP camera for beach house. I need still shots only

You could always put the camera in an enclosure, and make sure the enclosure is euipped with a wiper.  I have no idea what they cost, but it would protect the camera, AND solve your salt-spray issue.    If your camera has an I/O connector block, you could even use the camera to turn the wiper...

Long distance wi-fi - UAP questions (split topic)

What is your favorite SIP hard phone?  Which SNOM are you using?   (I'm a FreeSwitch guy, BTW...... they didn't have that one listed as a choice under profiles, but I used to use Asterisk, so...)   Also, do any of your hard phones support ZRTP?  I run fully encrypted whenever possible.
