    HAI Smart Lighting Replacement

welcome to the UPB club. It’s an old technology but works very well. I would consider keeping it if possible, especially if there is a lot of it already installed. I have SAI but they are similar. I have never considered replacing it.

Not that I know of but should work with any contact sensor.

    door locked sensor

Did you check your deadbolt? Some have magnets in the bolt for this.

Pete's Blog $13 voice assistant for Home Assistant

I tinkered with those. Definitely not a replacement for Alexa.

    Advice on TCP/Serial for UPB

Long ago when I needed a lot of serial ports I used a digi. Now I only have one so I'm using a usb-serial dongle. When I need to connect to the PIM from windows, I stop HASS and start ser2net and then connect to over ethernet.

Discussion/recommendations on expanding existing UPB / Z-Wave home system

I am worried about this as well. I currently have a broken UPB (rare) switch that I can't find a replacement for at a reasonable cost. I don't have Zwave and I've been hoping to not introduce another protocol. I was considering looking into ESPHOME for light switches in the future but haven't...

    EMAIL with WC32 or WC8

Not sure but Considering the changes to TLS over the years, you're probably going to have to figure out something that is old-school (plain-text). I have two WC boards, lucky for me I'm not sending email from them.

Why not? Is there something wrong with OpenVPN?

    Needing Remote Access Advice

IMO. Netgear is hot trash so I would port forward to the Synology and use that.

Everything Presence Lite Kit - $35 USD

Pretty cool. I'd be interested in hearing about people trying to use these with pets and also about mounting them to the ceiling in the center of a room. Until then, I'll hold off and continue with my very old PIR sensors.

    Raspberry Pi questions

Ira, if you want a turn-key HASS solution, the Yellow is probably best. They just got the first voice assistant released. It's probably going to be awhile before it's stable but it's looking VERY exciting. I've always avoided RPI hardware because of the memory corruption but that may have been...

    Is Charmed Quark gone?

The "hang out" was the CQC forums and here AFAIK. I ran CQC for a number of years and migrated to Home Assistant. I even wrote a few integrations (forget what they were called exactly) for CQC.

Sonos Amps taking down my network?

araknis? Are you outside the US? Also probably a packet capture might make it obvious. I believe Sonos also prefers dumb switches.

How to monitor quality of internet connection?

Make sure to set your Monitor IP address in pfsense. I wouldn't use any automated bandwidth tests. IMO those mostly waste bandwidth. They are useful for periodic troubleshooting. Also, keeping traceroute logs can be helpful. At work we keep 1 year history of packet loss data, latency, and...

Securing the Smart Home Network: The Risks of the IoT

I'm not worried for myself but most people don't know what they are buying or doing with stuff on their network. Also the people that are vulnerable are the ones who are not going to read articles like that. Right to repair and other similar legislation for companies that abandon products be...

    upb switch replacement from SA

I also have SAI and happen to have one HAI switch as well in my house.  Ever since the Pandemic I did hear production of SAI came to a halt. No idea what happened there or if they have made progress getting operations back. I think ideally you would stay on one system. You might find other brand...

    HomeAssistant to Omni via Omnilinkbridge

I'm a believer its best to run everything through a smart hub since it has the most capabilities and possibilities for automation. In your case it sounds like that would be Home Assistant.
